Bush Medijina was born from the desire of the Warnindilyakwa Elders to address the need to build culture and capability across the archipelago to positively impact the livelihoods of women, children and their families. The Warnindilyakwa community on Groote Eylandt suffers from the effects of poor health and life expectancy, low school attendance, low employment and safety standards, and high rates of crime and domestic violence. In response to this, Anindilyakwa Services Aboriginal Corporation (ASAC) introduced the Bush Medijina program to strengthen values, knowledge, culture, and community wellbeing.
Bush Medijina are governed by an all-female board. Eighty percent of the team are Indigenous, and 100% of the team are women. The Bush Medijina staff are mentored on learning corporate policies and procedures, and using technology to perform their day-to-day roles, all the while remaining true to traditional practices and cultural beliefs. Bush Medijina produce is harvested on Country, as taught to the women by their mothers, aunties and grandmothers. Each product is carefully handcrafted using traditional methods combined with new techniques to create Bush Medijina's own take on Elders’ bush recipes. By purchasing these products, you are directly supporting the team and business growth, as 100% of monies generated by sales are reinvested in Culture and capability-building programs.
